My dad used to say this too! Was it a Northern thing or just of it’s time?

Definitely not northern. My parents’ families were from the West Country. My mother also used ‘pulled through a hedge backwards’ to describe our hair.

My mum would say “you look like you’ve gone through a hedge backwards” ….. exactly like I felt today before a trip to the hairdresser!!!

Yep. In my case, this was usually followed by a vigorous brushing and an insistence on plaits or pigtails!

Oh those flipping pigtails …. replanted every morning and finished with a ribbon. I can’t count the number of times I was tied to a chair at school 😳😳

Oh, my. I’d forgotten that particular horror. It only happened to me once. I also had bubble gum stuck in my hair at school. That *did* make a bit of a bird nest mess! My mother was furious.
