Can you really tell the difference from this distance? Easy to determine from the needles, though.
(Where I live (Sweden) there is no sitka naturally, but my father planted few hundred as a test around 30 years ago.)

Depends on the distance, but I’m confident in my ability to distinguish between black, white, and Sitka spruce at most distances without difficulty. I certainly could not say the same about other types of spruce, let alone pine or fir trees.

But I grew up in a Sitka spruce rainforest and have lived in/around black spruce bogs for most of my adult life so it’d be rather embarrassing if I couldn’t tell them apart.

To be clear: Misander was answering my initial question, and sitka spruce is their favorite. And yes, I have sat under my favorite little pine tree a time or two. Not often, because of the location, but enough to know :)

Ah, sorry. I misunderstood. Yeah, you would know then. You feel the difference, if nothing else.

My father also planted some American Douglas Fir, but they have a very hard time surviving the first year here. However the one (out of 200) that did survive is wonderful. Soft needles.

The real secret is that their preferred habitats dont overlap that much: Sitka spruce in rainforests, black spruce in swamps/bogs, and white spruce in dryer/well-drained areas. There’s apparently a white/sitka hybrid, and id definitely have a tough time telling it apart.

But Meg said Norway Spruce. Black and white spruce is not the same as Norway spruce.
Here in Sweden we only have Norway spruce naturally. And I have some sitka (Canada-origin?), so I have seen. And normally there is color difference between Norway and sitka, but it seems like they can be similar.

This is my favorite tree, a young Norway Spruce. I love that it looks like a little witch. I get to see it every fortnight or so, on a particular drive to run out-of-town errands. It would be perfectly at home In Dreaming Avalon.
