I was a massive nerd from when I was a kid but didn't get a tech job till my mid thirties in the UK because except for a handful of trans women who transitioned in the industry if you transitioned young you couldn't break into it till recently.

a huge thing about this that a lot of people miss is that it's really centred on the West. in other countries the "all trans women are coders" thing just does not stand up.
hell, i've been working in tech for ~20 years and the number of other coders i've met through the industry is a handful.

In my mid 30s when I had spent a lot of my life learning to hack.
And before that I was a cleaner.
While tech had & still has issues, at the time it was easier for people to get into than other high paid jobs.
Progressive work environment, good pay and excellent healthcare benefits, strong union protections, etc.
I'm very conscious that I don't think I would be at the level I am today, or had the same opportunities, had I transitioned 20 years ago.
