Lots of people get understandably nervous about going to hospital to have an anaesthetic/operation, so I thought I'd go through the patient journey and what we do in theatre for a common, uncomplicated anaesthetic.

I won't spend too much time on what happens before hospital, but generally you may be seen in a nurse led/consultant led pre-assessment clinic where information about your medical history, medications, allergies etc will be gathered and made available for your team on op day.

When you come in for the morning, someone from the anaesthetic team will see you. This might be a resident doctor, or a consultant.

We'll normally go over your previous anaesthetic/surgical history, medical history, medication, fasting status, and perform an airway examination.

This is to make sure we come up with the best plan to keep you safe, well anaesthetised, pain free, and avoid sickness.

Every patient is different, and sometimes our plan might differ depending on your medical and anaesthetic history, so it's important to be as detailed as you can!

We might discuss placement of a 'tube' in the throat to keep you from 'snoring'/ protect your lungs in case any stomach contents come up and enter your airway when you are anaesthetised. This can be nasty if it happens!

We will warn you about some potential risks of this, including a sore throat, damage to the teeth, lips, and gums. These are fortunately very rare! Other risks include pain, nausea and vomiting, confusion, and allergy to the anaesthetic.

Once we are ready for you, you'll be brought to our anaesthetic room where you'll be checked in. When this is done, a small plastic tube (IV cannula) is placed into a vein, usually on the back of the hand. We give the anaesthetic, fluids, and other drugs you might need via this.
