There are some limitations that I set myself so that it sounds fairly close to actual stuff that was used in-game. My compositional approach is technically the same, regardless of the genre tbh haha

That's something I often tend to ignore, but the choice of sounds and also the mixing is drastically different - mixing is basiclly only volume and panning adjustments. I use a plugin called VOPM for 16-bit and a huge aspect there is shaping the sound of the instruments, which can take up some time.

Same! I grew up playing the shit out of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in particular which shows in my choice of bass and drums haha
