Alaska just passed the proposal allowing aerial and land hunting of wolves, brown bears, and black bears in the Lake Clark ecosystem. Gonna go cry now. Those poor animals' lives matter and that ecosystem matters.

The justification is that it will boost the dwindling caribou population. Of course, if they stopped for a second to look at the science, they would see caribou numbers are being reduced by climate change and habitat loss, not bears and wolves. But obviously they refuse to do that.
If your approach to wildlife management is to gun down wolves and bears from a helicopter, your wildlife management strategy is murder. I have watched bears for long enough to know they are intelligent creatures with great capacity for empathy and generosity. They are not mindless beasts.
If this sounds like anthropomorphization, please explain why Holly adopted an abandoned unrelated yearling. Explain why 910 adopted her niece. Explain why Grazer let her subadult former cubs eat from her catch. None of these things are advantageous to the bear. They do kind things anyway.
OK so I made this thread while crying and reading it back now I realize I made it unclear whether or not this was for recreational hunting. It is for wildlife management only, not recreational. However, the numbers to be killed for management are very bad. Up to 80% of black bears.
I couldn't say for sure. According to the stream of the Alaska Fish and Game board meeting, it passed. Unsure if it can be fought after that, but I'm honestly not optimistic.
This is absolutely disgusting. This isn’t management, it is trying to take a shortcut instead addressing actual issues such as climate change and habitat loss. Everyone who participates has no scruples as far as I am concerned and should be utterly ashamed of themselves. #noaerialhunting
