The drop in their graph long (April 2024) before they blocked Linux coincides with the start of Apex's almost 80% loss of total players because everyone's sick of their anti-player decisions and high-profile streamer hacks.

They didn't so much block cheaters as they all got bored and left 😛

They also had a 'meaningful reduction' in players (https://steamdb.info/app/1172470/charts/#6m), which could also account for a 'meaning reduction' in cheaters.

Their own chart was already showing a decreasing trend before they chose to block Linux players. Correlation does not imply causation.

Great article, so many Linux users wear tinfoil hats when it comes to anti-cheat support. I think the issue is that many people don't understand that anti-cheat on Linux is not 1:1 to how it functions on Windows. It's often much worse.

this makes sense - the most popular free cheat for Apex Legends was Linux only and was *insanely* simple to run and highly effective at doing what it does (no fancy anticheat bypasses or kernel fuckery - calling a built in Linux function, process_vm_readv, and nothing more)

Of course it reduced; I'm sure it will rise again as cheaters circumvent the anticheat and go back to cheating on other platforms. Client side anticheat is just a game of cat and mouse, they simply blocked one influx (along with lots of legitimate players)...

I see a paradox here that I don't understand.
Linux gaming is a very small market (3% ?) even if all are cheaters (of course impossible), how blocking them from gaming resolve the cheaters problem ?
It doesn't make sense to me.
