Honestly I think it's 1/3 of people like instrumental, 1/3 like vocal, and 1/3 are bisynthual and like both. I'm the latter.

Also, songs with vocals require focus listening, which is starting to die as most listeners are passive listeners who like to play music in the background as they work or go on social media.

Interesting. I've definitely leaned more towards instrumental since getting into the scene in 2022. I've made both instrumental and vocal tracks, and there definitely are some vocal tracks out there that I enjoy. I think the issue for me is some vocals can be a bit cringe.

I agree with your comment about cringe vocals, on many occasion I've heard banging tracks and then the vocal let's them down. I wonder why it's so much more noticeable in synthwave than other genres? Or do I imagine that??

I prefer instrumental synthwave because it's interesting to listen to how the producer fills that space that would normally be occupied by vocals. But only synthwave/electronic. I can't listen to instrumental rock, for example. I'm like "Ok, Yngwie, I get it. You can shred."

For me synthwave is all about creating vivid journeys which can be interpreted in many different ways by each listener,with lyrics your kind of leading them but with instrumentals the journey can be there own,I absolutely love vocal synthwave but personally I prefer to write instrumentals.
