So we have the answer for one question people were asking... people's gender markers are being changed back even for renewals, if they had an existing passport in a different gender even as a kid:

I've desperately wanted to change my name but then needa update passport and SS again...
my passport expires in 2028, which means it wasn't going to be accepted to be renewed by the Biden Administration in the run-up to the Trump Administration, so this could affect me
this doesn't make any kind of sense; State doesn't retain the change
my "original birth certificate" says F. my Social Security says F. my passport say F.
the government of Austria has my documents that say F.
I'd be real curious to know how the Department of State would beg to differ and on what grounds.
https://foia.state.gov/_docs/RecordsDisposition/A-13.pdf is the records disposition schedule for passports from the State Department.
I read this earlier, I thought the relevant line said "destroy when 5 years old" but I had the wrong line.
She did NOT already have a passport marked F, that they renewed with marker M.
She clarified this in the comments.
They are simply not accepting applications to change the gender marker.
I think I had a passport as a kid, but I was hoping that they wouldn't change it. Now I'm fucking terrified because I just submitted mine for renewal.
I lollygagged for the selfish reason that I'd gained 80 lbs since my last passport picture in 2016.
I thought I had time so it wasn't a big deal, surely this wouldn't be a priority or any law would have to pass through congress. I was not expecting it to happen this immediately.
FUCK.
