To put it simply, P:EG goes very much for style over substance. The art can be great at times, it plays a lot like an actual Danganronpa game, but that can’t distract from the core issue, that being that the writing is terrible.

I’m almost positive that the writers didn’t get any proofreading outside of people with natural bias, namely each other. There’s so many issues that are easy to spot if you’re not blinded by the project itself, and drown yourself in the hype.

One of the main issues is that the cast doesn’t feel like a group of people interacting. Sure, some people have relationships, but everyone else feels like they’re incidentally interacting with the others. Even a few of the established relationships have zero depth or explanation.

Damon, Eva, and Wolfgang are an obvious trio of characters, with Diana supplementing Eva and Wolfgang. But beyond that, everyone else is just there. Grace’s relationship with Wolfgang is told and not shown, and Jett and Mark have no chemistry. They’re just…together a lot. Mark doesn’t seem into it.

The cast ends up feeling very flat as a result. I honestly can’t tell you any character’s dynamics that aren’t extremely general. Grace is antagonistic towards Eloise, but Grace is antagonistic towards everyone. I get it’s early, but shouldn’t this cast feel more alive, not like set dressing?

It gets worse at the trial. The case itself fluctuates between handholding you through stuff that should be easily intuited, and major leaps in logic that are often backwards in how you’d make them. (Why are you proving how someone got out of a locked room before determining they were locked in?)
