There is no such place as Britain.

EU countries will veto any application by England to rejoin because of Englands disgraceful and damaging behaviour and the fact it cannot be trusted to tell the truth or behave itself in future.

Britain is a term that can refer to Great Britain, the United Kingdom, or both. I don't want to get sidetracked into semantics on this.

England thinks it going into EU again is a good idea as it is England. There is a complete lack of grasping the reality that it is a laughing stock all over the EU and widely hated. You should hear what gets said about you when you are not there.

You can say must, but it's not usually a word that helps to win hearts and minds, especially those who are still unsure about EU membership. I try to be more nuanced in my reporting. You of course are free to try different approaches.

A good summary, and an essential statement of the true basis of the EU. But: while Churchill advocated a United States of Europe, he did not see the UK in it. Rather the UK would still be a world power that would lead the empire, have a special relationship the US and act as counsellor to Europe.

Although Churchill in the late 1940s to mid 1950s did not envisage the UK being a member of the union of European countries that he so passionately advocated, there is compelling evidence that he later changed his mind. More in my article at https://churchill.eu-rope.com

The idea of a United States of Europe had been around since the 2910's with Coudenhove-Kalergi and Briand, and I can imagine 1950's Churchill agreeing to the UK joining in order to lead it, but I wonder if that scion of Empire ever envisaged the UK being just one of a group of equal member states.

By the end of the 1950s it was clear that Britain's Empire was finished, our Commonwealth severely diminished, and our 'special relationship' with the USA damaged following Suez. The UK applied to join the EEC in 1961. Churchill wrote, "I think the government are right to apply..."

Oh yes. By then it was more an attempt to rescue the British economy than any huge enthusiasm for the European project (tho I think Ted heath, at least, had real enthusiasm for that project).

Harold Macmillan, the British Prime Minister who applied for the UK to join the EEC in 1961, was certainly enthusiastic about the EEC project, as was Sir Alec Douglas-Home. I am not sure where you are getting your information from.

It is also well know that the UK tried repeatedly to stymie the European project (eg by setting up EFTA as a competitor) and that throughout its membership it insisted upon rebates, opt-outs and special treatment. It cannot join again unless it can convince the EU that this time the UK means it.

The quote is often attributed to Winston Churchill but there is no evidence that Churchill ever said or wrote this. It appears to be apocryphal, meaning it's widely attributed to him but lacks any reliable source.
