This was the best fried chicken ever. Better than KFC, even in the 80s. They got gobbled up by Popeyes in the 90s, if I remember right. Only two independents survive.

Used to eat there all the time when I was coming up

My homie lives near one of the two remaining here in LA and--although I eat a meal with him almost once a week--we never go

So this was a really interesting experience I just decided because a few weeks ago, I passed by this sign at the location where I remember I first went to Pioneer Chicken back in the 80's... the SIGN has never been taken down for over 30 years now.

So yeah... even a few years back, a Chinese Restaurant in its place even decided to make a sign in the shape of the Pionoeer Chicken logo... sadly they are no longer in business but the SIGN is still there...
Someone had to specially order a sign in this shape...

So I did even more digging today while I was driving around... and I checked to see that there was still a website for the chain... and it's copyright is THIS YEAR?!?
The place either still had (or more recently rejuvenated) two locations in Los Angeles... I HAD to go on the way back home.

Nostalgia... is a hell of a drug...
So I had the chicken, I can't tell you at all if it was anything like what I experienced when I was like... what... 3 or 5 years old?
But the atmosphere launched me back into the 80's...

Wow they're *still* around?! I remember seeing commercials for them when I was a kid, one offering a plush of their chicken mascot at one point. xD; There was never any locations close to me though.
