It's like a Cornish pasty but better. Miners working the tin & copper mines in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P. residents = Yoopers) needed an all-in-one meal to eat onsite and Cornish immigrants adapted the pasty to local ingredients. They're delicious!
Unfortunately for my sedentary lifestyle, they were originally intended to provide carbs, starch, and fat for a long day of manual labor so it's definitely a Sometimes Food. 🤣
