All that is fascinating and important to discuss in its own right. However it has sparked a similar thought in respect of Trump’s tariffs. Is it possible that he has deliberately established a high level early on, so that when he drops or cuts them, they can only look reasonable?

I do not mean that the tariffs are ever excusable, they’re not, and will do economic damage at any level. But I think that part of the plan may be to normalise the concept by offering reductions or delays so that he will look magnanimous by granting such reprieve.

Anyway, we should not allow him to normalise tariffs at any level, or let the daft political arguments that support them survive as meaningful contributions to society. Let your politicians know how tariffs affect you and how you feel about them.
