When Rush Limbaugh died, I was surprised at the number of normie middle-aged conservative men who came out on social media as majorly influenced by him back in the ‘90s and 2000s. Also, Tucker Max was a best-selling author. I think this has been around. Many of us just didn’t realize it.
It's been ages since I've seen the movie but I think there's a reasonable argument for reading No Country that way tbh, though he's not making it. Reading Lynch that way is just silly though
Agreed. He doesn't seem to think an artist's intent has anything to do with the art. As long as he likes a thing, it must agree with him. That mindset explains a lot.
My mother raised me to be Jesuitical, so yeah, I could probably make a better case than that for reading No Country that way too.
that's just it though, right? if you lionize viewing things through that lens, you can recuperate most messaging into propaganda that inoculates other followers from seeing messages that don't support hate
Well, it’s masculine to the extent that misogyny is a function of masculinity though I suspect that isn’t at all what the author of this article would say.
My thoughts exactly. Especially as I’ve noticed a progression from guys noticing half way through a game that you have a feminine name & deciding to make you the scapegoat for their anticipated oncoming loss… to proactively taking notice of a female name in the lobby & saying some rude shit.
The number of times I’ve had to just mute all my teammates in the lobby since January is easily 20 times as much as I have in the other 20+ years of my online gaming experience.
It's all the same thing - Gamergate was pushed from above, and the same people are pushing today's operations.
Also, Gamergate was used to recruit. Enrique Tarrio, who led the Proud Boys into Jan 6, first caught someone's eye as a poster during Gamergate, then was groomed by Roger Stone.
Golly, when you put it that way, it sounds like it was just one of many threads of an oligarchist soft coup plot that began to take shape shortly after Obama massively outraised their candidate, won and then privately offered them lese majeste, as if he was more important than they were.
I had a poster in my room in college in the 70s...."Men of quality don't fear equality". Kinda says it all about these misogynistic tools on the right braying about 'alpha males' and the crisis of masculinity.
Rush Limbaugh’s show was always overtly misogynistic, in sort of a sneering “what, can’t you ladies take a joke” way.
These new misogynists make joke, but their malign intentions are serious & they don’t care if you know it.
It scares me but it didn't shock me if that makes sense? It was always core to the white supremacist jackasses, and since they are now a large cultural driver of the right, here we are. The part that disturbs me is how teenagers and young men just accepted it as doctrine without thought.
People need to ask who is funding this. The only reason Keeperman got this interview in the NYT is that now he's a "publisher". It's fake respectability. Someone set him up to print racist material exactly in order to make these ideas part of the political discourse. https://bsky.app/profile/capitolhunters.bsky.social/post/3lo4owubiqc27
I think there's clearly a market for it. I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if people who like this stuff funded him. But the guys who are popular (Yarvin, BAP, etc.) started writing and found an audience not through investment but through people wanting to hear it.
I think the secondary effect is that there are still journalists swimming through the filth of Twitter and concluding that it's newsworthy (and I'm not sure I disagree - it really is everywhere, gross though it is).
We need to stop treating 'publishers' and 'writers' like respectable voices if they are in fact shills laundering extremist ideas in 'publications' funded by wealthy patrons. Otherwise we are tacitly allowing anyone with money to purchase acceptance for their ideas.
It’s unfortunately, a clap back on the #MeToo movement in which men were finally held accountable for crimes which have been committed for ages with zero penalties.
GOP women worried about their sons going to jail. 🙄
There is an underexplored theme of intense misogyny at the root of the pseudointellectual white supremacist Christofascist movement. (I posted a similar comment on another thread about this interview.) They really, really hate women— in all arenas of life, public and private.
