It’s always horrible when someone loses their life needlessly to gun violence but the fact is when you consider the level of abuse the American insurance industry has actioned & this supposedly is directly related, something in the back of the mind goes, fair dos.
There are non-profits such as Kaiser Permanente. Their CEOs are still paid millions of dollars and are run in a very similar fashion to the for-profit companies.
However, Kaiser does have a 7% claim rejection rate. While this is not great, it is better than United Healthcare’s 32% rejection rate.

Make the solid case first (although it will apply to a minority)
pointing at unproven medical interventions and why they should not be funded.
Do this to obfuscate the regular denial of standard proven medical interventions, because that is how insurers make money.
