because dad died of measles when Adriano was a young teenager. Adriano's mother predeceased him; she died of measles too. 2/

This was not a 'first-contact' epidemic; those are real, but Adriano & family had been in contact with settlers for generations by the time this happened. Measles is just that deadly. 3/

This was not an unusual experience for Maijunas, or probably other Indigenous Amazonians, in ARS' generation. I've worked with plenty of other Maijuna and Ticuna people who lost a large number of family members to measles, whooping cough, etc 5/

I really don't want to see anyone in the USA live what Adriano did; it was hard enough for him to tell & me to write the story at 50 years' remove. We have been lucky enough to forget these diseases b/c of vaccines, and we need to keep it that way. Get your shots 🧪 6/6
