In the Miller v. California (1973) a ruling was made that obscene material must appeal to a prurient interest, depict sexual conduct in a patently offensive way, and lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

This bill would change that definition across state lines in the US.

Instead it would label content obscene if it simply focuses on nudity, sex or excretion in a way that is intended to arouse and if it lacks “serious value.”

Right now Patreon allows explicit adult content to be created and paid for if it is an artistic depiction and does not involve actual humans.

If this bill were to pass (and as you can tell from the thread, it’s not the first time they’ve tried) it would enforce a puritanical control of artistic expression of the human experience.

Because of sex negative culture we got. It's hard for people to oppose these bills publicly. With everyone pretending like they ain't nasty and never even heard of pornography before except in passing. The puritanical artifice everyone wears is harmful.

I agree! The shame around sex is deeply rooted and reinforced, and the fear to speak up caused by that is part of what they’re counting on to continue trying to pass legislation like this. Banning something outright will almost always cause more damage than regulating it.
