While the obvious impetus for secession was protecting slavery in perpetuity—a fact established by the writings & imperial ambitions of secessionists themselves—the circumstantial reason for secession in 1860 was in part enslaver hysteria over a Black-white working class alliance.

But then, as now, white elites acted in horror at the prospect of a militant, multiracial threat to their power. Yes, i think you are right, it's an important historic parallel as you explain it. The importance currently placed on immigration as demographic change is a political driving force. But important to note that they have further goals in securing wealth/power.
