When I started, I was taught to think in terms of "clearance" - between the ground plane/canopy and the bottom of the knife. Taking pictures like this has let me to think more in terms of "front face thickness" being the performance variable with respect to knife aggression.
The one attached to this very iPhone. The mower is static on the green, and I have a flashlight. I like to occasionally take cutting units out onto the turf, get down into the cutline/canopy and see what we're actually dealing with, especially if there's an ACA or QoC issue.
