An excellent description of a grave and dangerous problem, followed by recommendations that are almost comically ineffectual. Yes, inheritance taxes are unpopular. But strongly progressive income taxation -- and, better yet, a wealth tax -- would have broad appeal.
A number of the American Founding Fathers wanted a 100% death tax to lessen the creation of inherited wealth, since they saw what it did in Britain.
Alas, it seems an ever-richer ever-more-insulated ever-more-exclusionary elite is acceptable now.
Money is power. Inheriting money means inheriting power. That is not capitalism. That is feudalism. Unless society accepts that common good is more important than personal wealth that is where we are heading. Feudalism.
