Oh, your last question: What did it cost? It varies greatly by editor. My rates are negotiable, depending on scope of work, but I (currently, always subject to change) use 3 cents USD per word as a baseline for a line edit, up or down from there.

I'm a professional freelance editor, and I point out that if you want to go trad-pub, your agent (if you get one) will help you with editing your MS, and the publisher will give you an editor as well, free. You may want to consider that. But no editor can help you polish a turd, so do your best.

Mine started her career as an editor for the big 5 and the way she’s helped me level-up my craft has been worth 15% even before she sells a book 🤷

Not all, but many agents are editorial. Wearing many hats. Have had multiple jobs in the sector before settling on agenting. Others are merely salespeople who read.

I chose one who I met through friends and we clicked immediately. She worked with me on a full edit...mostly copy but some developmental. I didn't get an agent but the manuscript just came as a finalist in the Wildhouse Fiction Contest. DM me if you want her info.
