When we ignore or forget that, we're taking on a particularly daunting task: build a controller *de novo*.

For disorders that are quite complex, involving many pieces and dances.

But we realize there is already a controller built into every DBS therapy: the patient+physician duo.

Then our job turns from a daunting forward engineering problem to a surely-tractable reverse engineering problem.

I'm back to academia as a postdoc, focusing currently on *structure* of brain networks - where do things connect with each other, and how do these connections relate to symptom improvements across disorders.

My broader vision is how structure constrains large-scale neural flows, how these neural flows power behavior, and how our contemporary DBS management mimics a model predictive control (MPC) approach.

One of the fun things about my trajectory: spending some time in Affect AI industry has greatly helped me figure out how we can do all this for _psych_ specific disorders.

A key component that has always been missing is a reliably basis set for representing affect/emotion state.
