Good Q. I think at the time there was still the sense that anyone who'd worked their way up through official GOP channels must be a reasonable person...and there had been a robust tradition in OR of being bipartisan, in part because the ideological divide between the parties hadn't been so huge.

As for the Hitler picture, I don't think Day is an actual admirer of Hitler. If he's like the other far right Oregonians I'm familiar with, he probably thinks erroneously, a la Jonah Goldberg ca. 2011, that American leftists are the Hitlers of our era and conservatives are their victims.

Interestingly enough, Yue, who had served as Oregon's RNC committeeman for over 20 years, was recently voted OUT of that role by his fellow Oregon Republicans. The lines of division within the OR GOP are incredibly hard to discern and seem to have more to do with personalities and strategy more than anything else. All competing factions are fully bought in, 100% MAGA. Even the people currently on the outs with the party are ultra-MAGA.

Vance Day is a longtime right wing activist inside the OR GOP. In 1992 he was part of a far right faction associated with the rabidly anti-LGBTQ Oregon Citizens Alliance who tried to hound out of the party the old moderates (like former governor Vic Atiyeh) who had historically controlled the party.

Pardon the string board nature of this post...but the mother of Solomon Yue's current partner was the chair of the Baker County Republican party from the 1990s into the 2020s and was allied with Vance Day's further right faction in the OR GOP from way back in the 1990s. These ties run deep.
