My fellow historian of early America, and fellow student of the very conservative historian Gordon Wood, wrote a very sober piece recently that came to a similar conclusion. It's truly crazy-making how many of our fellow Americans look upon what's happening as if it's totally normal.

The question I am really struggling with right now is:
What is "law & order" and the entire American constitutional order *for* if it isn't a Go Directly to Jail card for guys like Donald Trump and Elon Musk for doing *exactly* what they're doing right now?

Ruled by a lawless system.
That's reality.
35 years an exonerated person still no justice for all 40 of us. Please help us exonerated people get justice.

It’s all in the open! Switching sides in the Good vs. Evil paradigm should have pundits doing more than scratching their heads.
It is also an ethical and practical solution at this point.
Republicans Are Traitors.
I’m not trying to make an excuse for people, but I can see how they’d be like “oh, this is normal”

Watching the GOP brashly & indiscriminately destroy the lives of so many government workers and the the lives of citizens those workers help sure makes it APPEAR that voting is no longer an issue with which Republicans are concerned. Wonder why?
It’s a risky strategy, though. Kennedy’s line about making peaceful revolution impossible comes to mind. But maybe they think that ubiquitous surveillance & militarized tech will let them ride that out too.
Republicans and Democrats voters must stop this from happening!
What would this look like?
Wait out the clock.
He was about to be the next Bernie Madoff, but our justice system treated him like a rich plantation owner, rather than the white-collar criminal he is.
NYC owes us all for not putting him in jail in 1980s,1990s-grew up near NYC—knew people he harmed grievously
"Smash and grab"
The next cuts will be to Medicare and Social Security. That should cause enough social unrest to "justify" martial law.
If it gets as far as autocracy, history suggests that violence is the most common remedy, unfortunately. It is starting to feel like we are approaching the "let them eat cake" phase. The treasury was empty in 1788 and the French Revolution started in 1789.
They have some corrupt trick up their sleeve to ensure they won’t lose their grip on power

We shall see at the mid-terms.
I think a lot of people genuinely don't believe government can do significant things, either good or bad.
Literally not a part of their lived experience.
Until/unless some enforcement branch acts there is literally nothing stopping them.
And they control the federal enforcement branches. So it really comes down to whether anyone in those branches is going to act.
If this is different from the “very sober piece” you mentioned, I’d also love a pointer to that.
Google search is not very helpful these days - I tried.
The party of **in-group/out-group** ... is ok with reasserting segregation??? They think DEI is so bad that they're willing to harm people to re-establish social order from many decades ago?
It's almost like they value a certain social order over diverse minority inclusion???
But we have grave reasons to worry that there won’t be free and fair midterms in 2026. Trump is joking about a third term. I think it’s a deadly serious joke.
I’m willing to bet Trump runs again in 2028. Question is how?
I noted Trump‘s EO that claimed only he and his AG are the final arbiters of what a law is, not our Constitution.
*crickets*
Know that there was a Virginia Company before before there was a Virginia Colony, before there was an America. There was a Joint Stock Company outfitting the Mayflower as well, and expecting Profit.
So the US was a Company Town and Labor Gulag from the first.
