…British -an has been substituted for the Irish individualising suffix *-agna-. CVNOTAMI/CUNATAMI < PC *kuno-tamo- ‘doggiest, most doglike one’ is a specifically British name. Superlative names with the archaic suffix *-tamo- are not found in Ireland.

It's attested in 1st c. BC Britain, but that's not its origin. The nominal stem *k̑un- "dog" can at least be traced back to Proto-Indo-European in the 4th mill. BC, and who knows how much further back in time it goes.
