A warning about Fairphone: I have a FP4 and the hardware is decent (and more ethical - yay!) but they're really bad at keeping the software up to date, and even worse at communicating with customers about these problems. Might be less of an issue if you use a third party OS on it. - ThreadSky

Thanks for the heads up! Are you using their Fairphone OS or /e/OS? Also I heard the FP5 is more advanced… not sure if that’s applies to the update issue, but good to know that the hardware is decent!

I'm currently using the stock Fairphone OS. I'd love to de-Google but there are a couple of specific apps that I want to keep that are from the Play store and I need to see if it's possible to get them another way. I'm also concerned about whether or not the third party OSs will support passkeys.

Most should, but if you really need passkeys you can get a password manager like Proton Pass or Bitwarden that does and then you have them on every device :)

Yeah Proton is disappointing to say the least… Bitwarden is good! And if you don’t want to rely on their cloud services you can self-host a Vaultwarden server :)

Despite the CEO's questionable views, Proton are a Swiss company and host in Switzerland which probably still makes them the best hosted option if you're (understandably) concerned about the US government. Self-hosting something like Vaultwarden does give you a lot more control, but is more hassle.
