By the way - lots of countries don't have de minimis exceptions. UK, for example. Thing is, their post offices are set up to collect the duty that's due on things - you get a postcard telling you what you owe. (Recipient pays, not China.)

The effect of this on consumers who purchase things via Ebay, Shein, Temu, AliExpress and other similar sites is going to be interesting.

There used to be a de minimis duty exception that covered packages valued at under $800.

Good thing too as you're charged duty and vat and a nominal processing fee which dwarfs the other charges.
Also lots of lost packages without explanation. Hope US people enjoy this beautiful system as much as we do
