UK Research institutions are castles made of sand. At the best of times juniors researchers and support staff at the base are washed away by each wave. The storms of austerity have swept away most research council units. Unless funding bodies shore up their base they will be swept away too.
True. But at least the NIHR funding panel I'm on went ahead last week and recommended funding a heap of fellowships that will support researchers and science. Agree the wider system in crisis but (for now) we don't have Trump's scorched earth policy.
