Good music though with a real mix of styles - reminiscent of Kenji Kawai at times - and it's interesting to see an anime set largely in Turkey even if it was only really showcased in the first 3rd of the film. Will be interesting to see the Netflix adaptation to see if it fleshes things out a bit - ThreadSky

Week 4 - Emma: A Victorian Romance

Something a bit different this week, picked this up at a convention years ago out of curiosity but never got round to it. Hopefully should get through the 12 episode series in a week, got some far longer series queued up so this is a bit of a test

Emma was pretty decent, didn't exactly reinvent the wheel as British period dramas go but then it's not a British period drama - as an anime it's pretty unique. It's kind of refreshing to see an anime approach Victorian-era England straight, and the setting is authentic and meticulously researched

I could easily see it as a BBC period drama, and though it hits a lot of the story beats you expect from this sort of thing it does it well. An example is Prince Hakim, a character that quickly develops from culture clash comic relief to a counterpoint to the rigid Victorian class structure

The main issue with this release is that it's crying out for an English dub, although Nozomi did later crowdfund one I have the earlier sub only release. It is also actually the first half of the series, so it ends on a cliffhanger. Not sure if i can even see season 2 since the rights have lapsed 😭

I used to do anime reviews back in the day but as anime got more popular the number of releases just got too much for me to keep on top of, so a fair few slipped through the cracks. This is one I never got round to, so let's see what it's about
