I'm at a customer. I end up "consulting" on everything then developing. I started in NAV 25 years ago as a PM, learned functional, then learned dev.
Prefer functional- solving problems. Love to dev when needed.
Hate that, other than the owner, I'm probably the only one who has a wholistic view.

I like to think I combine both technical and functional aspects, but if I had to pick one, I’m more on the technical side to be honest 😅 I enjoy working directly with customers, supporting and implementing solutions while also developing PTE and AppSource apps.

You really are the jack of all trades! What do you enjoy more - writing PTEs to solve a very specific business process need, or writing an AppSource app where you have to be more generic to accommodate many use cases?

Both 😅 With a PTE on a new project you start with a clean slate. No dependencies or technical depth, where you can more easily implement modern techniques. On AppSource I like that it’s more challenging to gain experience. Not only the generic approach, but also onboarding, upgrades, extensibility.

I'm definitely more a technical guy.
I love to connect to different APIs in AL. This is so much more convenient than it was in C/AL.

I would really like to learn more about Fixed Assets in BC. ( I don't know this area since customizations are very rare there.)

So do you do a lot of development leveraging the HTTPClient to make external API calls? It's definitely not something I would say most developers do on a regular basis!!

And I have a newer project that uses Fixed Assets! I'm excited to learn more about them + reporting as well!!

Since I work in NAV for 20 years now, I did my part in various projects and roles, but I'm more on a technical side. Last period I'm mostly sitting between people requesting development and people doing development.

There are not many people that can translate functional to dev questions/requests and vice versa, I think that it requires deep knowledge of both sides so what is enjoyable is when I see that we can separate teams and empower functional consultants and devs to be best at their field.

Started as a cowboy developer where you had to know the functional side.

Transitioned to fully technical, with enough appreciation for the functional side to not pick fights with consultants :P

It's not a fight, just a passionate discussion! As a developer, we don't know all the ins and outs of the business processes, especially client specific use cases. We definitely wouldn't be as effective technically without the functional counterpart who is willing to take the time to tell the story.

What @mynavblog.bsky.social said at DOK Americas really stuck with me - are you an AL Developer or a BC developer? To be a great AL Developer you need to understand the business logic. So being a Technical Consultant is really the best of both worlds!!

I live in the Netherlands, I started developing in C/AL and now of course AL. The company I work for has still an embedded code base (process of moving to extensions is ongoing). It’s developed for the construction industry. Previously I have worked that so I know the process.

Our solution is that big that I think that almost nobody at our company knows everything. What I mostly like is that I can understand the customers wishes and translate them in working code or report.

I can only imagine that working in an embedded app has it's own set of challenges!! Much like the C/AL days. 🦕
