anytime someone complains about Monster Hunter focusing on story too much but never says anything about 4th gen despite 4 and 4U literally advertising that they have more story than the old games you can safely ignore anything they say after

the thing about trying to separate world and rise from everything else is that the "everything else" is almost 15 years of games being compressed into one glob that people haphazardly pull shit out of to make points that often dont make sense when you actually look game to game
the secret to actually understanding anything about the series evolution is that things get a lot more clear when you accept 4U was the actual shift in the series
Why would that make sense, though? I'm not an oldhead, but saying "oh but this older game had a much better executed version of the same thing, why do people have such gripes with the new thing?" doesn't really do anything to invalidate their opinion.
good thing the tweets before and after this put down the context of this post being about people who are adamant about there being a magical hard line between gen 5 and on and everything else despite the monster hunter series featuring a very clear progression of how its presented
my issue has always been with people putting everything before world in a meaningless blob without definition just to argue without having to think deeper than "people like the entry i dont like."
For certain things, that's something I do and don't see any issues with. For example every entry before 5th gen had necessary paintballs, more effectiveness of traps and bombs, no item box during hunts, a completely distinct healing mechanic, etc etc. Those completely change the flow of the loop, --
-- so from a pure gameplay standpoint, the games changed much more at one time with World than with previous generational titles. On the other hand, 4U and Gen had lots of structural changes and general vibe changes that went into making 5th gen feel like an expected evolution, so I disagree with --
-- people saying "oldgen was better" as a generalization, because after picking up any one of those games in particular, they'd surely have some problem with it, since they're all distinct.

TLDR: I see what you're saying and you're right.
