- Nationalise the whole lot.
- Bin the entire insane pricing structure/ticketing system, along with its impenetrable T&Cs
- remove train operators' ability to criminalise/ prosecute passengers
- Radically simplify tickets/booking
- slash prices to attract people away from cars/domestic flights

To be fair a fair chunk is now nationalised now.
The ticketing is silly, and staff need to rediscover comment sense and decency.
the mechanisms of rolling stock owners who then lease to the train operators is just a way to leech vast lumps of money out of the system.

I thought this comment was particularly telling. As someone who only uses Thameslink once in a blue moon, this assertion is utter rubbish. And notice the complete lack of willingness to accept that what happened in this case indicates it is not as clear as they smugly think it is.

It reminds me a bit of the Post Office case where every discrepancy was assumed to be as a consequence of the lying, thieving Sub Post Masters rather than a fault of the computer system; the only explanation is that he is a dastardly fare dodger and probably a fraudster, too.

IF you read the article properly, you will see that he HAD a ticket.
Messages on the train said he could use 1st class as it was full.
and that the train has 2 separate 1st class sections, but doesn't specify that only one of them can be used if the train is busy.
