Even if they couldn't introduce speed limiters, then they could install black boxes to track vehicles. All our works vehicles had them, with a personal drivers fob. Any erratic driving or speeding pinged up on the managers account. A big job for 40m vehicles, but certainly for repeat offenders

We can also use geo-data and other tech used by autonomous vehicles to limit vehicles to the actual speed limit on every road.

It works in Germany already. The Audi Q3 I hired could be set to follow speed limits, and predictively braked even for hidden signs. I think it used a combination of geo-mapping and cameras.

The German registered MG I hired could only do warnings for UK signs in mph (and refused to switch off).

All new cars since summer 24 have to have geo-aware automatic speed limiters but they can be easily switched off.

One feature that I like in our Dacia Spring is how abusive it gets if you stray 1mph over the speed limit. It flashes the speed limit sign on the dash. At 10% over it apparently shrieks at you. I have our speed limiter set to 70mph. I can’t see the difficulty in geo-speed limiters being introduced.

We have a 2021 Sandero Stepway. The limiter is manual and although the speed limit warning is on, it's subtle.
I like the more hardline approach.

Why 80? Should be 70. If tyre wear means you can only do 69, tough.

I drove an Audi Q3 with automatic speed limit detection in Germany, and I didn't find a circumstance where I needed to override it aside from a detection mistake where it spotted an uncovered autobahn limit sign through road works.
