So the first real policy decision on active travel or road safety by this government is a law targeting cyclists which will do nothing for road safety, briefed to a newspaper which openly hates cycling. Whatever your hopes for active travel from current ministers, perhaps calibrate these downwards.

You'd expect to say that of the Tories and Reform, but of Labour? Sad, because our new Labour MP is really good, but then she replaced Coffey, so not a difficult job. I wouldn't be surprised if she lost to a Reform candidate at the next GE

A case in point: Lucas Akins.

He admitted killing a cyclist by *careless* driving and got 14 months. No life sentence available to the judge because the max is five years.

Dangerous driving, though, does carry a possible life sentence.

I've seen "dangerous driving" dropped to "careless driving" on what appear to be the flimsiest of excuses. The entire system needs reform!
