Rotating art in the White House isn’t unusual, but historians can’t recall any president hanging their own portrait while still in office. Typically, official portraits are hung after presidents leave office, as a way to honor their service.
‘It just seems tacky,’ presidential historian Ted Widmer told the New York Times. ‘It feels different from our tradition of venerating the distinguished holders of the office from both parties — and going in a new direction of walking around looking at images of yourself all day long.’
