I currently have a dean that rewards good service, defined not just as a lot of it, but also
a) are you efficient in your service,
b) do you create systems that make other people's lives better,
c) does your service meet broader school goals?

Faculty are generally not taught to run effective meetings and if we know how to develop systems and protocols, it is a spillover from research.

But different is possible!

I volunteered for a committee that nobody else in my department was willing to don, despite being told I wasn't expected to take on more as untenured faculty. Was denied merit for service that year by my dept - I hadn't done "enough." Guess what happened the next time they needed a volunteer?

At my previous job, I was told that I should should "raise my profile in the profession" while I was on editorial boards, on an association council, and gave more talks than the rest of the dept combined. Ever fat file can look thin, every thin file, fat. Depends on whether they support you 🫠

It's fine. Lesson learned early. Moved on to doing the service I valued most (community-based, not university-based) and not worrying about what they thought.
