I even made sure the group itself got physical print proofs before publication. I handed them over to Mike and Gabe and asked them to give El one himself.

Everyone knew this book was being made, as it was being made and I did my best to keep them all abreast with its development.

It was a huge labor of love that took me many years, because I believe in documenting the context in which art that I appreciate was created, and how that in turn influences the world around said art.

That of course does not mean @el-p.bsky.social has to like what I did.

Yes. Nobody asked me to write this, there weren’t any contracts signed before I was years along. I started the project on my own dime. This was not something that was offered to me by another party. I did it because it felt worthwhile to me to document this part of music history.

i think you just have to take the good with the bad, man. the good is you wrote the book, it got published, and while we may not be out there promoting it for you we didn't go out and say "don't read this wait for our book!". that said you have to be able to handle the other side of the dynamic:

the way artists get written about is a stressed situation. you can either involve yourself in a complete strangers book about you in order to make sure it's accurate, thereby lending your credibility and name to something competing with your own ability to write your story or you can ignore it.

but one thing i've never heard of is someone not writing the book because the artist asked them not to. truthfully i don't think you would have put the book aside if we told you we preferred that either. so despite the respect, there is also a subtle hint of something else in that scenario.

i wasn't even really coming at you. the one book was one thing and we were cool with it but seeing another pop up using something i wrote as a title bugged me out. you were at least very clear about who "kill your masters" was about.
