I get your point, but I'd argue not deterring Russia from attacking in the first place was the worse offense. By letting Russia successfully use military force on Georgia, the annexation of Crimea + in Syria it was rewarded for resorting to hard military power.

Yes, but this is not a productive approach/model policy-wise. You can't undo the past (rollback the wars), but you can still mend the present (make sure the wars end on the right side of history). The new deterrence regime in EE is being birthed right now, and W.Europe has chance to play role in it.
