I bought a suit at a department story (like a JC Penney’s or something) then took it to a tailor to make sure it fit right.

since i'm a cheapskate, it's usually just the jacket/shoes i need to worry about.
you can pick up a decent formal shirt, tie and pants from most cheaper clothing shops. TJ Maxx, H&M, Target. (even cheaper if you check charity shops. i got a nice tie and cufflink set from one)

You *can* pick up a jacket from those same places, but it's best to check all of your options for one that will fit you correctly and last the duration of the event.

For something nice enough but off-shelf on obligation, someplace like Kohl's or your department store of choice.

For costumes, lower-cost stores like others mention in this thread, or secondhand stores.

For a more permanent wardrobe fixture, someplace like Jos. A Bank.

Since you mentioned cosplay: If you're a cosplayer with developed sewing skills, I believe (though it's been a while since I checked) that suits are relatively common pattern type that you could make yourself.

Probably not in the cards for a month out, but worth considering for the future.

Oh. Also, be careful with cheap white button-down shirts. They're often borderline or functionally transparent.

Find a local tailor or shop. They’re usually the best. But if you want quick and easy and you’re in the states. Then Men’s Warehouse is probably your best bet.
