There's a petition out now to put it on the ballot. If it gets the signatures and votes a commission will be created to see if it's feasible.
But then there's the reality. CONGRESS would make the final determination. Needs 2/3.
Will the red states give up their meal ticket? Zero chance.

Hardly. I'm a volunteer and a Californian who wants independence. The current administration of the US is the "Russia Op." if anything. Californians can do better without the dead weight of the US; unlike the US, we'd also support Ukraine's continued independence against Russia's invasion.

Putin might view it as a positive since it weakens a potential foe, but I don't care about Putin; I care about Californians. The US is far more dangerous to us. Also, California wouldn't be very supportive of Russia.

If California can become independent, so can other states, and California would almost certainly want some EU-like arrangement with them. We "donate" ~$100B to subsidize primarily red states that want to kill us with fire this summer. Enough.

I am less in favor of leaving the union. Withholding federal taxes is a more powerful message. If we did leave, we should as an entire block of Cali, Oregon, and Washington. And we should join Canada. Or enter into some kind of agreement with the UK, Canada, and Mexico.

How do you withhold your Federal taxes? California doesn't collect them; the Federal government does. The IRS would take what is owed. We'd likely be happy to create an EU-like arrangement with other newly independent states, Canada, and Mexico. Independence allows many options.

Is there any way we can keep our Federal Taxes from being sent to Washington? If the burden of caring for Medicaid patients is going to fall on States and Federal programs are going away California shouldn’t be paying a Trillion dollars in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
