so hear me out: Labour ministers spent three months talking about how sure the economic circumstances were, which we now know was successfully laying the groundwork for the tax roses and borrowing in the budget. 1/2
Could this be round 2? If we start to hear more and more about the costs of Brexit from Labour sources, I would not be surprised at all if it turned out to be laying the groundwork for a big EU course change. Fingers crossed.
Spain’s King Felipe excluded from Mexican president’s inauguration over silence to request for apology for Spanish conquest
The president-elect says in a statement that ‘Mexico and Spain share a solid relationship of friendship,’ but adds that ‘it would benefit from a renewed perspective’
Ignoring the headline here ... I'm not necessarily her biggest cheerleader, but due credit to Camilla for spotlighting and highlighting the issue of domestic violence and abuse. A salient issue that's been chronic the last few years!
She even talked of it as Duchess of Cornwall. 👏
They had the foolishness to recreate a monarchy when they got rid of Franco, they had an option of choosing a republic a la France next door. The nostalgia of colonialism I guess
To be fair, King Juan Carlos - Franco's groomed chosen successor - helped to usher Spain into democracy after Franco died ... Until he later abdicated when he was engulfed in scandal and corruption.
He also refused to go along with the coup attempt in 1981. [I've added a link in case anyone's interested.]
And while I'm not a supporter of monarchy, it also seems fair to point out that a constitutional monarch is not responsible for sending out flood alerts or disaster response teams.
Irish Republicans were considering who to install as King when we got independence. ‘A Prussian, prehaps?’Luckily that was in the late 19th century. When we got independence in 1922, we’d come to our senses!
Erm, I know it was the original (Arthur Griffiths) Sinn Fēin position, but a bit difficult to argue that it was republican, nationalist yes, republican?
Ow, later than I thought then 😳 Nationalist is a much better description actually. Republican was the first thing I thought of but makes no sense to say that with a monarchy
You know, as they seem to know this is coming down the track, you'd think Starmer and his chums would employ some sort of mitigation strategy.
However, appeasing Der Volkischer Beobachter and the cranks who think "Tommy Robinson has some good ideas" is more important than not tanking the economy.

We have parliament and elections for the fair representation of the people.
This is the 3rd Millennium AC.
The heck.
We're stronger together in a union with our European brothers and sisters.
What a calamity. I've lost friends over this. Didn't speak to a family member for 2 years over her vote.
Oh, go on, Dawn... 😬😂😘
Doesn’t make them wrong, we’re still to enact full border checks, and god knows what else that’s not being reported..
Thankfully they do predict actual growth..

(yes, yes I know, I know...)

I'd almost claim that I'm just a pendant, but I'm not just a pendant...
As a republic Spain would have fallen apart after Franco. Basques and Catalans would have quarrelled over a head of state.
The king was there, fixed, no need to rotate to give every region an equal share. No discussions about it.
My 5 Cent being anything but a royalist.
