No politics was discussed by anyone in my home yesterday at Thanksgiving dinner. Not because we would have argued, though. It was more like everyone just wanted a day of not discussing politics.

That sounds really nice! I have tried so hard not to make politics the thing that divides family. I'd like to think family love is stronger than that. Unfortunately it takes work from everyone, and some are just not willing.
I miss being normal, where a family dinner didn't feel like threatening.
I was a little disappointed with my 35-40 year old kids. All progressive democrats but claim to not be worried and just going to ride it out. Crazy because two of them became 1st time parents to girls this year. One got a little miffed w/ me asking if they are doing anything to prepare
With the exception of one person wearing a sweatshirt showing Trump in front of the white house, captioned “daddy’s home”, there was no political commentary at our gathering.
We placed a ban on politics and we honored it, for the most part. I had two teeny lapses-
1. I told my father (quietly) not to try and suck my son into that Fox hell hole.
2. When my father complained that his new stove top was really expensive, I said, “Not as expensive as it’s gonna be!” 😂

We did alright for a while. Until a group went out for a walk. I caught them on the way back and was about to join up with them but heard them talking politics and told them, oops, I’m not joining you.
The bright side is that I gave an emphatic pep talk to one relative who was really depressed.
Same. We just casually acknowledged the awfulness when they arrived & didn't bring it up again. We were all on the same page & that was more than enough to be thankful for!
A good, civil, politics discussion at our dinner! I was lucky enough to bite my tongue just in time as I was finding out in real time that newly elected MT Senator Tim Sheehy is a shirttail relative by marriage! Damn it was close,…
I’m from Denmark but Amercan politics is a great concern of mine.
I wonder why “the greatest nation on Earth” isn’t capable of having a normal democratic election?
Why Can it be the a nation with Microsoft, Apple, Google, Oracle etc cannot trust an electronic voting scheme? I dont get it
It was a great day here laying in bed together watching football. Since it was just me & my husband we ate sliders & French fries with key lime pie for dessert. Then a nice soak in the hot tub! Fabulous day!
Same here Jack. But probably because everyone knew it was taboo. Fortunately everyone in the family is on the same page. We/I just needed a break from the crap.
Same. But I was in the company of mostly Veterans. I am part of a 5 generation military family. There was a palpable undercurrent. Like we all knew everything will be different next year.
I knew politics would be an unavoidable topic among my family, so I skipped the annual Thanksgiving trip. It’s rather sad that we never had to resort to such measures prior to Trump entering the scene & spreading his hate & division. We MUST rid of the MAGA toxicity to return to normalcy!
I agree with you, but I think Trump’s the guy who gave them a renewed sense of purpose. It’s my belief that once he’s out of the picture, many of them will not be inspired enough to be an integral part of our electorate.
I can see that, but it’s gonna be 17 years before he’s of an age where he can run. By that time, I’m hoping the MAGA movement will be a distant memory.
21 adults not counting teen, tots and babies. I was amoug the 3 Dems and the rest were all Trumpers. Host texted everyone 'no politics or religion' and it was honored.
It makes me wonder why everybody talking about the press normalizing trump and musk is any different than millions sitting down to normalize a day that means so little to so many.
I agree, they are part of why nothing changes.. they doner lose their family or friends that they vote against.. I can never eat w a Trump supporter and be friendly pretending they didn’t vote to put me and my family in danger.. never
A friend going through a bad break-up asked to come to dinner. He moped, complained, didn’t eat, didn’t interact with anyone and overstayed his welcome (by 5 hours) and he was still more pleasant than a trump supporter.
Let bing in Texas means having a maga heavy family.
What I can say that is hopeful is that my 12 college aged nephews and nieces are all pissed and know what the orange bastard really is. There is light at the end of the tunnel
Same at my house.. sadly I just believe it’s for now… once Trump takes office and shit starts blowing up. I believe things are gonna get ugly between family members. I have said that I do not want to have hate in my heart, but I struggle sometimes with my Maga family members.
It was thankfully avoided at ours, too, at least until the end of the evening. That's when my brother's family got ready to leave, and his wife (a MAGA-ette) just couldn't help herself.
