I was taught to play this game as a child…we played it IN SCHOOL….not on our own, LEAD BY THE TEACHER….man, that WAS some fucked up shit. I haven’t thought about this in years…
Wow, suddenly that makes me realize I was kinda brainwashed in the 1980s into thinking "hangman" was OK. As long as it was just a cartoon and a word game. But the history behind it was totally fked up.
i mean, did no one stop to ask why that was okay to play as kids? it traumatized me cuz i didnt want the guy to die! and why are you using a black marker on a whiteboard!
I'm still amazed when I recall how much I enjoyed playing this game in grade school--as an educational exercise, no less. There is a candy & toy store on LI that offers a version of this game. I haven't spoken up, yet, but it gives me chills every time I see the packet on the shelves.
Used to hang out with the pastor’s wife and kids, when I was a kid, and Christian. They LOVED playing “save-a-man”, where it was hangman, but backwards.
So the executioners would be loping body parts off, instead of sewing them off, and I can’t tell which is worse.
For a moment, I forgot hangman was lost by adding more limbs back (hence the executioner sewing the arm back on). For some reason I was remembering the game starting with an intact hanged man who, with each wrong guess, gets a limb sawed off. I guess both versions suck.
