I had a sidekick/hiptop and we had our own social networks too, till my crew joined twitter and broke up. I'm still friends with some of them as well as internet people I met in 1998. <3
Does anyone else remember https://Bolt.com?? It was like a kids social network in the 90s and I made my first Internet friends there, but no one else seems to know it exists.
Social for me early to mid-90s was Usenet, bulletin boards(originally on dial-up BBSs then web forums) and IRC. And frankly, the internet didn't improve much since then. Faster, more people, but all corporate-owned.
Omg😂. I tried explaining Geocities to youths recently and I sounded like a maniac. They could not understand why we “would do all that work”. I can’t wait to play with Neocities and do that work like it’s 2002!
TBH, I am fine with that turnover. It was really an outlier when we all stuck with like the same handful of sites + maybe a couple new ones, many of which were bought out by the old ones, for like 15+ years. That was probably users handing too much sway over to, it turns out, the worst people.
