Sorry if that came out harsher than I meant, I intended it to be lighthearted just re Franco and elections, which didn't really go together. Great book! Spain in our Hearts by Adam Hochschild is really good too. And Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell.
I loved the Orwell when I read it in college. I’ll check out the Hochschild! I am, for no particular reason, currently obsessed with Spain in the 1930’s :)
Really a fascinating time. I'm doing a deep dive on the Vichy collaborationist government in France at the moment which has interesting echoes as well.
Oh man, my obsession with the Front Populaire, the rise of the francophone fascist press, and the insanity of 1930’s France borders on the unhealthy. The next time I’m there I’m going to try and find a framed portrait of Lèon Blum that will fit in my suitcase.
Very good, and absolutely terrifying. Beevor is as straight a bowler as you’ll find as a historian, right up the middle, but that makes the horrors all the more impactful. The way that fascist rhetoric sounds like MAGA and the Carlist fanatics foreshadow American Christian nationalism is chilling.
