But their victory is not our victory. Indeed their victory is in spite of our utter failure to help them in their hour of need. Their celebrations cannot rightly be ours, for we discarded them. We have made the decision to discard Syria over and over again ever since Obama's ignored red lines.

One of the few clear moral cases in the last 25 years of foreign policy and we punted on it. At every turn, our leaders chose to continue punting on it, for no better reason than that doing anything substantial would have been inconvenient. So to the Syrians I say: Godspeed, and I'm sorry.

We have already failed the Syrian people in 2012, then the refugee crisis that led to kids drowning in the Mediterranean. I cannot wait to see these people prosper, rebuild the Syria that was rich in history, in culture, diversity. They deserve so much better than Assad-Isis-Assad pipeline
