Woke up to an email about someone pulling a contribution about Palestine from a thing I edit.

This week, I was invited to be on a panel that has Palestine in the title. I slept on it before agreeing.

What does academic freedom even mean when academics are being snatched off the streets? +

Neither the emailer’s contribution nor the description I wrote for my talk could be misconstrued as antisemitic. Theirs is about a particular kind of cultural preservation, mine is about using data for advocacy/activism (both for the Israeli hostages and murdered Palestinians). And yet… +
The abject horror of students and colleagues being taken because they engage in discourse related to Palestine is real. As an editor, I’m open to anonymity/pseudonyms. As a naturalized US citizen, I’ll say yes til they try to strip that too. +
I don’t fault anyone for wanting to protect themselves - it’s really the only strategic thing to do. But if you are in a relatively protected position, like I am as a tenured faculty member & naturalized citizen, please don’t retreat. There is too much to lose.
This is just another part of Trumps America.
It doesn’t exist at all for non citizens. May not exist for brown citizens and will not exist soon for white citizens.
