I don't really think of myself as a Christian Pagan.
I was a pagan teen, then in my 20's, feeling very lost and alone, I found what I thought was community through a friend's church. The insidiousness of the Church as a dominant source of community is not talked about enough. 2/🧵

It preys on the lonely, vulnerable, poor, disenfranchised, those desperate for hope and family, and it is incredibly good at hiding its bigotry, hypocrisy, and revisionism.
I'm speaking here of how individual churches behave, how they draw in new converts, especially the young and ignorant. 3/🧵

I loved my friend's church at first. It had that vibe that churches in wholesome movies have; neighbors helping neighbors, a small congregation of caring people, with a simple message and beautiful hymns. But it was conservative. We got engaged, and went through a premarital program there 4/🧵

I joined a church near my apartment who drew me in with uplifting messages, great music, a focus on healing the hurting. I was baptized there. I am, and have always been, queer. I first came out as Bi at 12y/o. Had I known more terms, or had any connection to the community earlier than my late 20's, I would've shed the label "woman" far sooner, and embraced my current beloved string of labels 😂
