1) Had WaPo ever before killed a Telnaes cartoon because of such repetition with an Op-Ed? Ever?
2) Given the sensitivity around independence of the press generally and the WaPo specifically, really, you want to kill this cartoon just to avoid being mildly repetitive? Really? Now?
That's the typical old shell game spin. No different than; fire experienced aged 60 worker of 29 yrs & hire inexperienced 42 year old & claim "see, look, the firing wasn't ageism we hired someone 2 years over the line. It had nothing to do with the 60 year old being 1 year shy of full pension."
Or firing 15,000 American workers to hire H-1Bs to pay them less $ & benefits, work them 80+ hours/week & threaten them with deportation if they complain.
"My decision was guided by the fact that we had just published a column on the same topic as the cartoon and had already scheduled another column — this one a satire — for publication. The only bias was against repetition."
This is why I choose not to renew my subscription to WaPo come February when it expires. The amount of groveling towards the incoming administration by all these billionaires is completely disgusting.
Yeah yeah blah blah blah excuses excuses false equivalencies & justifications of what is unacceptable behaviour & actions from WaPo. If this response wasn’t such a farcical & outrageous LIE to defend oligarch $ it would be an @theonion.com article. What a joke.
Hahahahhahahhahahahahha. How many fucking articles did they wrote about Claudine Gay or Biden pardoning his son? Shipley can fuck right off for insulting our collective intelligence.
The editor is very aware of how costly this decision will prove to be and is doing (lame) damage control. In all of this we lose yet another good newspaper to the billionaire techbro oligarchy.
I’m guessing that the image of Bezos was too spot on for sensitive egos.
3rd time’s a charm. Please add an editing button. I’m really not as stupid as my typing skills indicate.
"Repetition" doesn't seem to have been something that bothered them in the past. Hillary's emails, Hunter's laptop, and Joe's age have thoughts on this topic...
It’s also pretty clearly ret-conning what happened. She’s been around, if when she first pitched the idea she was told, ‘We’ve just done four pieces hitting that, it’s over saturation’ she may have grumbled, but it would have made sense.
Confirms that my decision to cancel WAPO a couple of months ago was a good decision. I feel badly for some of the really great reporters who work there, but wonder if it is just a matter of time before their work meets the same fate.
It's amazing how they expect their readers to keep paying them when they have such disdain for them.
If they really think their readers are that stupid, I'm not sure how they expected them to figure out sending them money to begin with.
"Not every editorial judgment is a reflection of a malign force,"…until they are. This is just a bullshit evasion from someone who got caught with the finger on the scale to benefit Trump.
Having people like bret Stephens or Jonathan chait some of the most intellectually dishonest people to put words on a screen. The entire premise of the magazine is take gullible centrists and launder centre-right ideas to them pushing them to the right.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the link. Both of which I will to deeply mull.
I'm one of the 200,000+ that ended their subscriptions to the post. And was delighted simply to be able now to read four of their best in the Atlantic.
BS. As a former journalist and current consumer of MSM (altho not for very much longer), this is a crock and he knows it. On any given day there are overlapping columns/other content on the same topic on the front page. If I thought it would matter I could compile 10 recent screenshots of same.
I think she should rethink her resignation. The editor's reasoning for not publishing her cartoon may be a lie, who knows....but it was plausible. We need people like Ann to fight from within...by quitting she gives up any power she might have.
Somehow, he also felt that no amount of "holy shit Joe Biden is old" stories ever reached a saturation point, even if there were 20 a day within the first three pages of the front section
Don’t cartoonists mostly get their themes and put their artistic twists on what’s been in the news? If so, curious here that Post editors chose repetition as the reason to kill it.
My straight up reaction is F*CK this guy. Editorial cartoonosts across the country are being dismissed becaus these spineless newspapers can't show respect and stand up to any backlash. Hell, these jerks would throw Bill Mauldin out on the streets.
And the pulling of Harris endorsement. I appreciate their reporters and columnists but their editorial decisions show us who owns the paper doesn’t have democracy or light as a priority
To argue that what just happened at the Post does not "directly affect" the other journalists is pretty twisted. The whole point of what Bezos did is to intimidate those other folks.
Funny how Republicans had such an issue with Biden's age but are too cowardly to call out the simple fact that Trump is also far too old/incompetent to be POTUS
"Not EVERY Tesla burns/kills people."
"Not EVERY word from Trump is a lie."

We learned in the 1930's that appeasement of fascism does not work and only leads to emboldening it. In the cases where the media has/is caving to the theofascists, cancellations/boycotts as well as pro-democracy street protests should be encouraged.
It’s so shocking to me that supposed reporters who I assume have degrees in journalism can be so incredibly blinded by the glaring march to fascism when their education should have taught them that EVERYONE is at risk. The media, the academics, the opposition, the “other “ LGBQT, women are in danger
It's as if they're all mesmerized by the "show" to the point of complete inaction. It's the job of the press to protect democracy and uncover/report on these things. But they all stare, awe-struck, at the approaching theofascist storm. And yes, we are ALL in danger.
Shipley doesn't lie well. Remarkable to see such cowardice coming form the editor of what once was a hugely significant newspaper. Since when is a cartoon considered repetitive of a written editorial(s), LOL.
Maybe Mr. Shipley can take the weekend to think about his behavior & hopefully come back to the situation with clearminded discernment. Upholding a free press shou be policy, repeated over & over so that democracy doesn't die in darkness.
It may be a free press, but I'm sure Shipley's kids go to a very expensive private school. Plus he probably has a mortgage and a car note to worry about as well.
because this was the first time in history that a political cartoonist submitted something with similar content as an op/ed that had been run previously...
Good thing they only wrote one “Biden is old” and “here’s what diners in Iowa have to say about inflation” articles. Wouldn’t want too much repetition.
LMAOOOOO how many articles did they publish on inflation and the broken border over the last 2 years?
Repetition is LITERALLY THE JOB OF JOURNALISM WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM THAT ISNT BEING ADDRESSED APPROPRIATELY!!!!
"...Mr. Shipley noted that Ms. Telnes was acting hysterical as a woman, probably due to lady issues. He offered her the weekend to reconsider her decision."

What’s next? An inaugural re-enactment road show?
Well, patriotic Americans will stand up for him anyway.
Simply put: I DON'T BELIEVE HIM.

Looking back. Political cartoons are often repetitive to what’s written in the editorials. Sometimes for days in a row. Go figure.
